Jubilant scenes unfolded across Keralam and the national capital on Monday as early counting trends in the state assembly elections showed the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) heading towards a commanding victory. With the alliance crossing the halfway mark, Congress leaders and workers broke into celebrations marked by cake-cutting ceremonies and the beats of dhol.
At the KPCC headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, senior leaders, including Shashi Tharoor, KC Venugopal, and Ramesh Chennithala, gathered as trends firmly tilted in favour of the UDF. The celebrations featured a cake-cutting ceremony, with leaders exchanging hugs and greeting party workers who had assembled in large numbers.

The festive mood was mirrored at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi as well, where supporters waved party flags and danced to dhol beats as the alliance maintained a strong lead. Party leaders called the early trends a clear indication of public support for a change in governance.
According to trends released by the Election Commission across all 140 constituencies, the UDF is leading in over 100 seats, comfortably breaching the majority mark. The Congress alone is ahead in nearly 58 constituencies, with its allies, including the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), contributing significantly to the tally. In contrast, the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, is trailing with leads in just 40 seats.
The numbers point towards a likely return of the UDF to power in Keralam after a decade, potentially ending the two-term rule of the Left government. As counting continued, party workers remained upbeat, confident that the early momentum would translate into a decisive mandate.
‘A mandate for change after a decade,’ says Shashi Tharoor
Reacting to the trends, Tharoor said the results reflect a desire for change among voters after ten years. He emphasised the need for a new political direction, stating that the mandate signals a shift towards a more constructive and forward-looking approach to governance.
With celebrations gaining momentum and leads consolidating, the atmosphere within the Congress camp remained one of cautious optimism, even as counting continued under tight security across Keralam.
